As I continue my journey in my new role at TESCO Metering, one of the highlights of my training this week was uncovering the fascinating story behind how TESCO’s EVSE test equipment came to life. I’ve always believed that understanding the origins of a product gives you a deeper appreciation for its purpose and potential—and this story didn’t disappoint.
It all began in 2014, with Dr. William “Bill” Hardy, an American physicist with a knack for problem-solving and innovation. As the electric vehicle market was beginning to take off, Bill noticed a critical gap: while charging infrastructure was rapidly expanding, there was no standardized way to ensure chargers delivered accurate and reliable measurements.
Fast-forward to 2018, when TESCO acquired PMI, recognizing the innovation and value behind their work. By integrating this cutting-edge technology into TESCO’s portfolio, the company expanded its mission of delivering reliable and efficient testing solutions—not just for metering but now for electric vehicle supply equipment as well.
During my training this week, I had the chance to work hands-on with the T4350, the evolution of that original vision. As I practiced demonstrations and learned about the technology’s unique features, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the ingenuity and dedication behind its development. Knowing the challenges that Bill and his team set out to solve adds a layer of meaning to my work, and it’s a reminder of why accurate, reliable testing is so vital—not just for compliance but for fostering trust in an industry that’s shaping our future.
This story encompasses what TESCO is all about: innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. It’s exciting to be part of a company that not only creates solutions but also carries forward the legacy of pioneers like Bill and his team. As I continue to learn and grow in this role, I’m eager to build on their vision and contribute to making EV charging safer and more reliable for everyone.
He teamed up with a talented group of engineers to address this issue. Together, they conceptualized and developed a groundbreaking solution that would later become TESCO’s EVSE test equipment product line, starting with the T4000. Their goal was clear: create a tool that could not only meet emerging standards but also simplify testing for those tasked while ensuring compliance.
The story gets even more interesting when you realize the international collaboration involved. A team of engineers from the Philippines joined forces with Bill, combining their expertise to design and refine the technology. This collaboration led to the founding of Power Measurements, Inc. (PMI) in late 2014. By 2015, the team had turned their idea into a reality with the release of their first commercial product, the T4000.
