The EV industry moves fast, and as an EVSE Test Equipment Product Manager, my weeks are filled with a blend of industry developments, policy shifts, hands-on product enhancements, and collaboration with key stakeholders. This past week was no exception—it was packed with discussions on compliance, federal policy updates, and engineering innovations that directly impact EV charging infrastructure. Here’s a look at how it all unfolded.
Monday: Adapting to Federal Policy Changes
The week kicked off with a deep dive into recent federal policy changes. The suspension of the NEVI program and the revocation of the 2030 EV sales target sent shockwaves through the industry. While these shifts introduce uncertainty, they also reinforce the need for reliable EVSE testing. Infrastructure investment may fluctuate, but ensuring charger accuracy and compliance remains a constant necessity. Conversations with industry partners revolved around how manufacturers and service providers are adjusting their strategies. One key takeaway: as policy evolves, the demand for certified, tested, and compliant EVSE is only growing.
Tuesday: Pushing Innovation with Engineering
Midweek was all about refining our EVSE Test Equipment. I worked closely with engineering on two critical enhancements—MiTM cable adapter testing and hybrid Power Load offset solutions. These aren’t just incremental updates; they address real-world testing challenges that field technicians face daily. By ensuring compatibility across a wide range of chargers, we’re making it easier to validate performance and compliance in diverse installation scenarios. It’s exciting to see how small refinements lead to major improvements in user experience and testing accuracy.
Wednesday: Strengthening Industry Collaboration
My role extends beyond product development—I’m also deeply involved in industry discussions. This week, I connected with colleagues from the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) to discuss ongoing efforts in EVSE standardization. A major topic: how to streamline testing requirements across different states while maintaining consumer protection. Weights and measures officials play a crucial role in ensuring EV chargers provide accurate energy readings, and aligning industry standards is key to widespread adoption. Collaboration is what will ultimately drive EVSE reliability forward.
Thursday: Overcoming Compliance Challenges
Compliance remains one of the biggest hurdles in the EVSE space. This week, I worked with State level EVSE stakeholders who were upgrading from the TESCO T4000 to the T4350. Justifying the transition to new test equipment isn’t always easy, but when red tag notices and regulatory requirements come into play, the value of advanced testing solutions becomes clear. The discussion reinforced the importance of pre-installation verification—catching issues early can save companies from costly retrofits and reputational damage down the line.
Friday: Understanding Incentives and Consumer Impact
To wrap up the week, I took a closer look at how EV incentives are shaping the industry. Kelley Blue Book’s recent analysis of EV incentives and Ford’s expansion of its home charger program highlight a growing effort to make EV adoption more accessible. While incentives help drive deployment, they also underscore the need for accurate, trustworthy charging solutions. If consumers are going to invest in EVs, they need confidence that public chargers perform as expected. That’s where EVSE testing plays a pivotal role—ensuring reliability and transparency in the charging experience.
Looking Ahead
The past week reinforced a few key themes: policy changes may shift the landscape, but the need for accurate EVSE testing remains paramount. Industry collaboration is essential for standardization, and innovations in testing technology continue to solve real-world compliance challenges. As I gear up for another busy week, I’m reminded that every conversation, product enhancement, and regulatory discussion contributes to a more reliable and consumer-friendly EV charging ecosystem.
Stay tuned for more insights from the front lines of EVSE testing!
